In the 19th century, tar (Finnish “Terva”) was Oulu´s main export product and “Tervaporvarit” were Oulu´s leading merchant families, who traded tar abroad. Thereby, we wanted the name of our youth chamber of commerce to stand out from the traditional ones in line with the spirit, and the history of Oulu inspired it. The tar merchants were the international net workers and traders of their time selling tar in the 19th century, so they are perfectly suited as a role model for the new chamber. That`s how the name became JCI Tar Valley Oulu.
